The Sun
The sun is a giant burning ball of gas that burns off hydrogen and turns into helium. The sun is neither a solid nor gas but is plasma. All of the heat from the sun is generated from the core. The centre is 15 million degrees and the surface is 6000 degrees .Every second, 700 million tons of hydrogen is converted into 700 million tons of helium every second. Therefore as time goes by the sun becomes lighter. Flares rise in the Chromosphere. These are bright fragments of hot gas coming from sunspots.
The corona is the outer part of the sun’s atmosphere. It is in this region that the suns prominences are immense clouds of glowing gas that erupt from the upper chromosphere. The outer region of the chromosphere consists of particles that travel away from the sun far into space. The corona only can be seen during total solar eclipses. Every second, 700 million tons of hydrogen is converted into 700 million tons of helium every second. In this process 5 million tons of pure energy is released, therefore as time goes by the sun becomes lighter. The sun’s visible surface the photosphere is about 5,800 C. The sun can be divided into 6 layers which are:
1. The core
2. The radioactive zone
3. The convective zone (these are the solar interior parts of the sun.)
4. Photosphere
5. Chromosphere (then these are the visible surface parts.)
6. Corona (The outermost layer)
